The Government of Guyana has announced that all outstanding debts owed directly to the University of Guyana (UG) by former students will be written off.
This decision forms part of a broader plan to abolish tuition fees at UG starting January 2025.
The new policy will impact approximately 13,000 students in its initial phase and extends to other technical institutions such as the Carnegie School of Home Economics and the Guyana School of Agriculture.
The move is expected to reduce the financial burden on students while increasing access to higher education across the country.
To ensure the University maintains high academic standards, the government has committed to providing financial support.
It has pledged that the current budget will remain intact, with plans for gradual increases over time.
Additional measures to strengthen the institution’s academic capacity may include engaging international experts to enhance its offerings.
This initiative reflects a strategic effort to foster greater access to education while ensuring quality remains a priority.
The policy is anticipated to create opportunities for students and contribute to Guyana’s ongoing development efforts.
