Food for the Poor Donates Industrial Sewing Machines to Guyana Prison Service

Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. has generously provided ten industrial sewing machines to the Guyana Prison Service at Lusignan.

This donation is part of an initiative to train over 30 prisoners in sewing skills annually.

The sewing machines will play a crucial role in supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration program of the Guyana prison service, contributing to positive behavior change and providing inmates with valuable skills for their future.

Andrea Benjamin, Senior Project Manager at Food for the Poor, emphasized the importance of engaging inmates and providing them with skills for successful reintegration into society.

Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, expressed gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the positive impact these machines will have on the training program within the prison. The sewing program has already demonstrated its effectiveness through the production of various items, including school uniforms, officers’ uniforms, and prisoners’ uniforms.

In this garment construction program, participating prisoners are compensated for the garments they produce. The Prison rehabilitation program focuses on enhancing prisoners’ physical, mental, psychological, and social well-being, as well as their vocational and economic potential.

This generous donation is expected to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the inmates, providing them with valuable skills and opportunities for personal growth and development.
