Five Low-Income Families Receive New Homes through Core Homes Initiative

By Saskia Warrick

Five low-income families residing on the West Bank of Demerara were handed the keys to their new homes on Monday, marking a significant improvement in their living conditions.

This initiative falls under the government’s Core Homes Initiative, which aims to provide better housing for low-income and vulnerable families across Guyana.

Funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), these homes are being constructed by the Central Housing and Planning Authority of the Ministry of Housing and Water. Each home, costing approximately $5 million, features two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a kitchen.

Additionally, the beneficiaries, who also own the land, contributed $100,000 towards the construction of their homes.

Among the recent recipients, Rupert Alleyne and Shelley Alleyne, expressed their gratitude to the government for their new homes.

Rupert Alleyne shared his experience of living in flood-prone conditions previously and expressed his joy at the prospect of a more stable living environment.

Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal acknowledged the challenges encountered during the implementation of the project but assured that all identified beneficiaries are on track to receive their homes.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing adequate housing for all citizens.

Since the launch of the Core Homes Initiative, a total of 105 houses have been distributed, with 45 of them allocated in the Onderneeming and Lust-en-Rust vicinity alone.

This initiative signifies a significant step towards improving housing conditions and providing stability for low-income families in Guyana.

As these five families settle into their new homes, it serves as a reminder of the government’s dedication to addressing housing needs and improving the quality of life for all Guyanese citizens.
