In a significant move to improve healthcare services for expectant mothers in remote communities, the first-ever Maternal Waiting Home has been commissioned in Mabaruma, Region One.

The $46 million facility is designed to provide a safe and comfortable environment for high-risk mothers and first-time expectant women who require additional care while awaiting delivery.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony and regional officials, marked the completion of the vital healthcare addition to the region’s infrastructure.

Dr. Anthony commended all those involved in the development of the waiting home and stressed the importance of ensuring that patients feel comfortable when utilizing the facility.

The Maternal Waiting Home aims to support the Ministry of Health’s goal of achieving zero maternal deaths.

Regional Health Officer Dr. Steven Cheefoon highlighted that the home will bring mothers from remote, riverine areas to the facility at 34 weeks of pregnancy, ensuring that they deliver in a safe hospital environment, as recommended by international standards.

The 46-million-dollar facility includes 12 beds, a kitchen and dining area, washroom facilities, an on-call room, and a delivery room, enhancing the maternal care options available to the community.
