Fire Suspected to Be Caused by Electricity Theft Leaves 11 Homeless in New Amsterdam, Berbice

An unfortunate fire suspected to be caused by electricity theft has ravaged two homes in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, rendering a total of 11 individuals homeless.

Rudolph Majeed, one of the occupants of the destroyed homes, recounted the harrowing experience.

The fire erupted shortly after 8:30 a.m. while he and his wife were in the lower flat of their residence.

Upon hearing strange noises, Majeed investigated and discovered that the upper flat was already engulfed in flames.

Despite their efforts, they were unable to extinguish the rapidly spreading fire.

Additionally, Majeed’s wife operated a small shop on the lower level of their home, resulting in a complete loss of their belongings and livelihood.

Looking ahead, Majeed expressed uncertainty about their next steps, emphasizing the urgent need for assistance due to the substantial financial loss incurred.

Divisional Fire Officer Kirkland Harry confirmed that the fire was likely a consequence of electricity theft.
