A devastating fire on Saint John’s Street in New Amsterdam, Berbice, has left four individuals homeless after it destroyed two buildings and extensively damaged a third.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning, prompting a swift response from the Guyana Fire Service.

Divisional Fire Officer Kirkland Harry informed reporters that three fire tenders were dispatched promptly to the scene to combat the inferno.

According to Harry, two buildings were completely engulfed by the flames, while a third sustained significant damage.

As a result of the fire, four individuals have been left homeless.

The Divisional Fire Officer revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the fire was deliberately set by unknown persons.

During the firefighting operation, one firefighter sustained a fractured leg.

However, Harry dismissed allegations that the fire service was slow to respond, stating that they arrived at the scene within three to four minutes of receiving the call and worked diligently to bring the blaze under control.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire as efforts continue to provide support to those affected by this unfortunate incident.
