A fire this morning destroyed a house in Plum Park, Sophia, leaving a family of five homeless.
The fire was one in three reported this morning as Guyana observes Fire Prevention Month.

Taxi driver Mark Cordis and his partner, Yolanda Gilgeous, who works at the Campbellville Post Office, along with their three children, are now homeless.
Among the lost items were essential personal valuables, including a land certificate and the children’s school supplies.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the mother spoke with the media.
“I was sitting on the laden and the neighbor said that fire on this one side and by time I run inside I see the whole one side start burning I took of one of the bottles from the stove and I push out the bottles them and by time I go to go back in the smoke done coming into my face,” Gilgeous said.
Guyana Fire Service Operations Officer, Commander Orin Bancroft confirmed that the structure was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival.
“After we received at the fire at block E Sophia Plum Park, four vehicles were disseminated to dispatch to this given location. The building was already engulfed in flame immediately three …. was deployed to put out the blaze,” he explained.
The fire at Sophia was one of three attended to this morning by the Guyana Fire Service, and too as it observed Fire Prevention Month.
A grass fire broke out near the burial ground in Plaisance, and the Campbellville Secondary School canteen suffered a fire which was successfully extinguished.
