Fire Destroys Home and Furniture Establishment in Canje

Millions in losses as furniture store, house destroyed by fire (Newsroom)

A fire of unknown origin has completely destroyed a two-story wooden and concrete structure at Lot 61 West Canefield, East Canje Berbice, leaving six people homeless.

The building housed a furniture establishment operated by 52-year-old Deodat Tikchand and his family.

Tikchand reported that the fire started around 9:45 PM. He was awakened by his sister, who informed him that a fire had started on the lower flat of the building.

Despite his efforts to intervene, the fire quickly engulfed the area that housed the furniture establishment.

Tikchand ensured that the building was completely evacuated while awaiting the arrival of the Guyana Fire Service, which took some time to reach the scene.

Unfortunately, Tikchand lost over 32 years’ worth of equipment and recently purchased items for his joiner shop.

Despite the significant losses, Tikchand expressed determination not to give up on his business and plans to restart as soon as possible.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
