Farmers across Guyana will receive crucial support to sustain their agricultural productivity during the upcoming dry season, according to Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha.
The announcement was made during an outreach event in Region Six over the weekend.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydromet Service has predicted above-average temperatures from September through November 2024, which could exacerbate challenges related to heat and its impact on agriculture, livestock, and public health.
In response, the government is preparing to assist farmers by ensuring the availability of necessary resources.
Minister Mustapha highlighted that a task force, in collaboration with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and other agencies, has been working to prepare for the expected dry conditions.
Efforts include maintaining water levels in conservancies, enhancing irrigation canals, and providing pumps to aid farmers.
Additionally, during the outreach, Minister Mustapha distributed essential farming inputs to 12 groups in Regions Five and Six.
These inputs, which include tools and planting materials, are intended to reduce production costs and boost yields for local farmers.
The government is also committed to increasing large-scale production to help achieve a 25% reduction in the regional food bill by 2025, further supporting the agricultural sector during challenging periods.
This initiative reflects the government’s dedication to supporting farmers and ensuring food security amid adverse weather conditions.
