Dave Martins, the celebrated Guyanese cultural icon and musician, was cremated following a private ceremony held at the Kaashi Dhaam Crematorium in Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara. President Dr. Irfaan Ali was among those who paid their respects.

President Ali has recommended that Martins be nominated for the Order of the Caribbean Community, a distinction recently awarded to Sir Clive Lloyd at the Heads of Government Meeting in Grenada.

The President commended Martins for his significant contribution to Guyanese culture and his role in uniting the nation against threats to its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Retired Major General Joe Singh reflected on his deep friendship with Martins, noting the personal and professional bond they shared.

Singh highlighted Martins’ empathy and connection with ordinary people, emphasizing how his upbringing on the West Coast of Demerara shaped his understanding and support for local communities.

A memorial honoring Dave Martins’ life and legacy will be organized at a later date.

Martins was the leader of the renowned Caribbean band The Tradewinds, known for hits such as “Cricket in the Jungle” and “Not a Blade of Grass.”
