Facilitating Agricultural Growth with the Tacama Wharf

David Fernandes, the Director of Tacama Gold Incorporated, reports that construction of the wharf in Tacama, Region 10, is currently underway.

This critical infrastructure will play a vital role in supporting the corn and soybean project.

Since the commitment made in 2022 to reduce the food import bill by 25 percent by 2025, the government has invested approximately $1.2 billion in infrastructural development in the Tacama area, Berbice River.

This includes the construction of 40 kilometers of road, the country’s first drying and storage facility for corn and soybeans, and a wharf worth 150 million dollars.

Fernandes emphasizes that the wharf will significantly improve river access to the cultivated land, streamlining transportation for farmers and facilitating export activities.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha expresses his satisfaction with the project’s success, which has exceeded initial expectations.

Plans for expansion are already in motion.

This large-scale initiative involves collaboration between the government, farmers, and private companies.

It is projected to reduce imports of corn and soybeans by 50 percent by 2025, resulting in an annual import cost savings of over 10 million US dollars.
