In a thrilling start to the ExxonMobil/New Era Entertainment FUTSAL Tournament, 20 teams descended upon the Retrieve Hard Court in Linden, vying for a cash prize of one million dollars and an equivalent amount for a community project of their choice.

The tournament, inaugurated on Friday, has already proven to be a spectacle of goals and excitement, igniting the local sports scene.

The event’s sponsor, ExxonMobil, expressed its commitment to corporate responsibility by not only providing prize money but also contributing to youth development through sports.

Ryan Hoppie, Communication Relation Advisor for Exxon Mobil, addressed spectators on Friday night, emphasizing the company’s dedication to fostering youth talent and community engagement.

The tournament follows a round-robin format, offering all participating teams the chance to showcase their skills in a series of matches leading up to the finals scheduled for November 25, 2023.

Wainwright Bethune, President of the Upper Demerara Football Association, voiced his full support for the tournament, recognizing its potential to boost football talent in the region.

Over the weekend, the tournament saw remarkable performances, with teams delivering impressive goal tallies.

Hardknocks dominated Genahside with a 15-3 victory, while Coomacka exhibited their prowess with a 13-2 win over Fearless.

LA Ballers outshone West Side Ballers, securing a 12-6 victory, led by Andre Mayers with five goals.

Other notable matches included The Gorillas triumphing 8-4 over One Side, Youth United narrowly defeating Anybody Gets It 7-6, Golden Stars securing a 5-3 victory against Hillsyde Ballers, and Gold is Money edging out Blueberry Hill with a 7-6 win.

The tournament promises to continue its momentum, with seven games scheduled for Wednesday’s matches.
