The Marine Cage Initiative, an ambitious project aimed at enhancing the aquaculture industry, will soon be expanded to several hinterland communities.

This announcement was made by Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, highlighting the initiative’s growing importance.

The Chinese Embassy has donated 50 marine cages to support this expansion.

These cages will be installed in various hinterland communities to further bolster the aquaculture industry.

The trials conducted in Capoey, Mashabo, and Mainstay have shown tremendous results, underscoring the potential success of this project.

The expansion is expected to significantly improve the livelihoods of fisher folks, with an estimated $8 million to be generated annually.

Minister Mustapha noted the success of the trials and the substantial impact on the communities involved. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Ali’s vision of the aquaculture industry becoming a potential powerhouse.

The minister also mentioned the government’s readiness to partner with investors to capture 25% of the $4 billion US aquaculture market.

Between 2021 and 2023, production in the aquaculture sector increased by an impressive 755%, from 112,000 kilograms to 958,000 kilograms annually.

This significant growth is a testament to the effectiveness of initiatives like the Marine Cage project.

This year, the government has allocated $1.2 billion to further expand the fisheries and aquaculture sub-sector, with an expected growth of 15%.

Minister Mustapha reiterated the government’s commitment to specific development projects, such as the cage culture, to ensure sustainable growth in the industry.

The Marine Cage Initiative is a key component of the government’s strategy to enhance food security, create job opportunities, and boost economic growth in the hinterland regions.
