Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar, has announced that the existing Demerara Harbour Bridge will be removed following the completion of the new bridge across the Demerara River.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge, operational for over four decades, has been pivotal in connecting Guyana’s main economic regions but has now exceeded its lifespan.
In light of Guyana’s rapid growth and development, the construction of a new four-lane bridge is essential to support the current traffic load and enhance economic activities between several regions.
Minister Indar assured that the new bridge would alleviate the existing traffic congestion and that additional connector roads are also being constructed to further improve traffic flow.
The new bridge, a fixed 2.65-kilometre, four-lane, high-span, cable-stayed structure, will span the Demerara River.
It will feature a driving surface width of approximately 23.6 metres.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2024 and is anticipated to significantly boost traffic efficiency and productivity in the region.
Discussions are currently ongoing regarding the fate of the old bridge structure once it is dismantled.
The new infrastructure aims to provide easier access and support Guyana’s continued economic advancement.
