Essequibo Anacondas Clinch Inaugural GCB National T20 League Title

In an impressive performance, the Essequibo Anacondas emerged as the champions of the inaugural Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) National T20 League after defeating the Essequibo Jaguars in the final at the National Stadium in Providence.

Opting to bat first, the Anacondas posted a competitive total of 159/5 in their 20 overs.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the national opening batsman, led the charge with a stylish 43 runs off 20 balls, which included 4 boundaries and 2 sixes.

Contributions came from Kevon Boodie (24 off 30 balls) and Keemo Paul, who added a rapid 38 runs.

Quentin Sampson, the big-hitting all-rounder, finished off the innings with an unbeaten 27 runs from 18 balls, ensuring a strong finish.

In response, the Jaguars struggled against a well-rounded bowling attack, with Richie Looknauth taking the spotlight by claiming 4 wickets for 21 runs in his 4 overs.

Captain Antony Adams, the tournament MVP, provided solid support with 2 wickets, while Nial Smith and Garfield Phillips each claimed a wicket.

Zeynul Ramsammy was the only batter to resist, scoring 34 runs off 30 balls, but the Jaguars ultimately fell short, ending their innings at 111/9.

Anthony Adams, captain of the Anacondas, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance: “At the beginning of the tournament, we spoke about being here at the end, and it’s great to come out and dominate like this. Well done to me and my teammates for winning the tournament.”

The victorious Anacondas took home a $1.7 million prize, along with the championship trophy.

Earlier in the day, the Demerara Pitbulls claimed third place with a comfortable victory over the Berbice Piranhas.

The tournament, sponsored by BetCageSport and supported by the Government of Guyana, concluded with a thrilling finale, cementing the Anacondas’ place in history as the first-ever T20 league champions.
