The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), led by its Chairman Shaikh Moeenul Hack, deployed a team of Commissioners and staff to Region Two, where the bodies of those who lost their lives in the MV Barima Tragedy are being received and where grieving families have gathered. The visit forms part of the Commission’s commitment to stand alongside those affected during this period of national mourning.
The ERC delegation, comprised of Commissioners Rev. Rodwell Porter, Mr. Ashton Simon, Mrs. Chandrowtie Sarran, Mr. Neaz Suban, and Mr. Deon Dick (Ras Khafra) and supported by staff, travelled to the Charity River Dam, Suddie Hospital and the Suddie Funeral Parlour and engaged with the bereaved families at the respective locations, offering words of comfort, emotional support, and counselling, while listening to their concerns during this profoundly difficult time.
Chairman Shaikh Hack noted that the Commission’s presence is intended to reassure affected families that they are not alone in their grief.
“At moments such as these, our shared humanity must guide us. The Commission stands in solidarity with every family affected, and we remain committed to providing whatever support we can as our nation mourns together.”
The team also met with His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, to offer the Commission’s support during this tragic period and was briefed by the Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health, on the ongoing response and support efforts.
The Commission expresses its deepest condolences to the families who have suffered the unimaginable loss of loved ones and continues to pray for strength, comfort, and healing for all those affected.
The ERC also commends the emergency responders, healthcare workers, volunteers, and all those who continue to provide assistance and care. As Guyana grieves together, the ERC calls upon all citizens to continue supporting each another with empathy, compassion and prayer, while keeping the affected families in our thoughts during this time of national mourning.
