ERC Promotes Ethnic Harmony in Region Six Through Public Engagements

By Celestine Chacon | November 5, 2024

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), operating under Article 212 D of Guyana’s Constitution, conducted a series of public meetings in Region Six as part of its mandate to foster ethnic harmony and equal opportunities.

The engagements, held on Monday in the towns of New Amsterdam, Rose Hall, and Corriverton, were aimed at promoting dialogue and understanding among citizens.

The ERC’s Chairman, Shaikh Moeenul Hack, addressed attendees, emphasizing the importance of unity, respect, and mutual humanity.

He encouraged citizens to use technology responsibly, highlighting that devices such as cell phones and laptops can be tools for either positive or negative outcomes depending on how they are utilized.

The commission also visited schools in Region Six, extending its message of inclusivity and shared humanity to younger audiences.

The ERC, a non-political body, was reconstituted in March 2023 by President Irfaan Ali after being inactive for eight years.

It continues to monitor and address administrative acts and omissions that impact ethnic relations in Guyana.

This latest series of engagements underscores the ERC’s commitment to ensuring all Guyanese feel represented and valued in the country’s social fabric.
