Empowering Youth through Fire Safety Awareness: One-Day Kids Fire Safety Camp

In a proactive initiative aimed at promoting fire safety awareness, 150 students from various schools along the East Coast Corridor participated in a one-day kids fire safety camp at the Lusignan Centre Ground.

The event, organized collaboratively by the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Guyana Fire Service, sought to equip students with essential knowledge and skills to respond effectively to fire emergencies.

The Lusignan Centre Ground was filled with eagerness and excitement as students engaged in hands-on activities and interactive sessions led by experienced firefighters.

The camp featured practical demonstrations on fire extinguisher usage, emergency evacuation procedures, and basic first aid for fire-related injuries.

Fire Chief Gregory Wickham, who actively participated in the camp, emphasized the critical importance of engaging with schools, especially in the aftermath of the tragic fire incident in Mahdia where several children lost their lives.

He expressed the Fire Service’s strategic decision to educate children, providing them with life-saving information that can extend beyond the classroom.

Chief Wickham commended the students for their enthusiasm to learn and encouraged them to share the acquired knowledge with their families and friends.

The initiative aims to empower the younger generation with real-world skills that can make a significant difference in emergency situations, preventing the destruction of life and property by fire.

Beyond the immediate impact on the students, the Chairman of the Mon Repos/La Reconnaissance Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Jagroop, expressed gratitude for the support of the Fire Chief and team in making the fire safety camp a memorable and impactful experience.

Plans for future educational initiatives to enhance community safety are already underway, showcasing the commitment of local firefighters to proactive community engagement.

This one-day fire safety camp serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts between community leaders and emergency services in fostering a culture of safety and preparedness among the youth, ensuring they play an active role in safeguarding their lives and the lives of others in emergency situations.
