Empowering the Visually Impaired: GCOPD and ExxonMobil Launch Second Phase of Orientation and Mobility Program

In a collaborative effort, the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) has joined forces with ExxonMobil Guyana to initiate the second phase of the Orientation and Mobility Programme.

This program, set to benefit over 200 blind and visually impaired individuals nationwide, focuses on providing essential training for safe travel and independent living skills.

Ganesh Singh, the Director of GCOPD, expressed his satisfaction with the launch of the second phase, emphasizing the program’s pivotal role in offering instructed training for blind and visually impaired individuals who have lacked such opportunities for many years.

The program aims to address the longstanding absence of specific training for this segment of the population, marking a significant step forward in empowering individuals with visual impairments.

Ganesh Singh highlighted the responsibility of organizations in spearheading initiatives that equip this population with essential skills for their survival.

Lashawna Prescott, Community Relations Advisor for ExxonMobil Guyana, voiced the company’s pleasure in participating in a project that raises awareness and acknowledges the importance of developing the skills of people with visual impairments.

Prescott underscored the life-changing impact of providing resources, information, and support for individuals with visual impairments, benefiting not only them but also their families.

The Orientation and Mobility Program encompass a range of skills for visually impaired participants, including the use of smartphones and computers, travel skills, and basic household activities like cooking.

The second phase of the program is slated for implementation in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10.
