A recent three-day training program in Region Six, funded by the European Union, has equipped several ranks with essential knowledge to effectively address domestic violence and gender-based offenses. This initiative is part of the COP SQUAD program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
The training, held at the Felix Austin Police College on the Corentyne, was a collaboration between the Ministry and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under the Spotlight initiative.
Dr. Wanda Chesney, a Training Consultant at the Ministry, emphasized that the ranks have gained valuable insights into gender-related issues, domestic violence, and their manifestations within Guyanese society. The curriculum delved into various aspects, including the Domestic Violence Act, the Sexual Offences Act, and measures to combat human trafficking.
Region Six Commander, Shipersaud Bacchus, urged the trained ranks to implement their newfound knowledge effectively in their roles. He also highlighted that more ranks in the region will have similar opportunities for training.
At the graduation ceremony, each rank received a Ministry of Human Services and Social Security Copsquad 2000 pin, along with a certificate of completion.
This program not only empowers law enforcement officers but also signifies a concerted effort to combat domestic violence and gender-based offenses in Guyana.
