Empowering Education in the Hinterlands: ‘Because We Care’ Cash Grants Make a Difference

The Ministry of Education has reason to celebrate as schools in the hinterland regions of Guyana report a significant improvement in both enrollment and attendance.

This noteworthy progress can be attributed to the implementation of the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant initiative.

One of the prerequisites for eligibility to receive the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant is that the child must be enrolled in school and maintain regular attendance.

Since the reintroduction of this initiative, schools in the hinterland regions have witnessed a surge in student attendance.

Deputy Chief Education Officer, Marti De Souza, lauded the impact of the grant, emphasizing how it has been instrumental in supporting parents and subsequently leading to improved attendance rates.

Furthermore, De Souza highlighted that in conjunction with the school feeding program and other interventions, these efforts are yielding positive outcomes in these remote areas.

In line with the government’s manifesto, there is a strategic plan to incrementally increase the education cash grant to $50,000 by the year 2025.
