Guyana’s top sprinter, Emanuel Archibald, faced a setback at the 2024 Paris Olympics, failing to advance from the men’s 100-meter heat.
Competing from lane 6, Archibald struggled with a slow start and ultimately finished in eighth place with a time of 10.40 seconds—one of his slowest performances this season.
South Africa’s Akani Simbine won the heat with a time of 10.03 seconds, followed by Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake in 10.06 seconds and the British Virgin Islands’ Rikkoi Brathwaite in 10.13 seconds. Archibald, who entered the games with a personal best of 10.09 seconds achieved earlier this year, was aiming to maintain his excellent form and progress to the next round.
Unfortunately, Archibald did not qualify for the semifinals, where only the top three finishers in each heat and the next three fastest athletes advance.
Brathwaite and Blake are the only Caribbean athletes moving forward to the semifinals.
Looking ahead, Aliyah Abrams, a three-time Olympian, is scheduled to compete in the women’s 400 meters event on Monday.
