Starting this month, pensioners across Guyana will benefit from an electricity subsidy applied directly to their GPL accounts.
Deputy Director of Social Services, Hamwanttie Bisesar, explained on NCN’s Guyana Today how the initiative is structured to assist senior citizens in managing their electricity bills.
Bisesar shared that an annual credit of $30,000 will be applied to pensioners’ electricity accounts, which breaks down to $2,500 per month.
This subsidy is not designed to cover the entire bill but to offset a portion of the pensioners’ monthly GPL costs.
For pensioners using prepaid electricity systems, Bisesar noted that the subsidy will be placed into the pensioner’s GPL account’s virtual wallet.
Pensioners can withdraw specific amounts from their $30,000 credit at any time, allowing them to manage their electricity usage.
Those whose accounts do not reflect the subsidy are encouraged to visit the nearest GPL office with valid identification and account information.
For further assistance, pensioners can contact GPL’s Call Centre at 226-2600 or toll-free at 0475.
