The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is taking steps to facilitate easier access to Old Age Pensions for residents in remote areas and hinterlands.
This initiative comes in response to concerns raised by pensioners from far-flung communities along the Demerara and Berbice Rivers regarding the challenges of traveling long distances to access their pensions.
Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, during a visit to the Watooka Guest House in Linden, took the opportunity to engage with citizens and address their concerns.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, emphasized that the ministry has already implemented several measures to ensure that pensions are distributed effectively in these remote regions, and the effort is ongoing.
Dr. Persaud stated, “This is something we have to address and address urgently… So we’re in the process now of trying to find a solution and it will be done.”
In addition to this, the minister stressed the importance of collaboration with village leaders to extend this service to communities throughout the country.
She also highlighted that the ministry is actively providing assistive aids to individuals living with disabilities, including wheelchairs, walking canes, and hearing aids.
The ministry’s continued efforts are aimed at ensuring that every eligible pensioner, regardless of their location, can access their Old Age Pension without facing undue hardships.
