Education Minister Affirms Consideration of Teacher Licensing for Enhanced Quality Assurance

Education Minister Priya Manickchand has emphasized the ongoing consideration of licensing for teachers, a measure aimed at elevating accountability and ensuring quality delivery within the profession. This move aligns with global practices where many countries have already implemented teacher licensing systems.

While initial plans anticipated implementation in 2022, the process remains under review and is still on the table. Minister Manickchand believes that discussions around professional licensing and accountability are essential, expressing hope that institutions like Bishops’ High will lead the way in this regard.

The Minister’s push for teacher licensing comes in the wake of continued calls for all educators in the public school system to undergo formal training. Additionally, Manickchand advocates for a reevaluation of the promotion system for teachers. She emphasizes that promotions should be based on performance rather than seniority, highlighting the importance of tangible contributions to students’ education.

Enhancing the education sector has been a focal point in recent years, reflecting the need for Guyana to align its human resources with its developmental aspirations. Previously, around 70 percent of teachers were formally trained. However, this figure is now on track to reach 100 percent, thanks to expanded training capacities and methodologies at the Cyril Potter’s College of Education (CPCE), supported by various partnerships and online learning initiatives.
