Early Detection Vital: Cataract Awareness Month 2024

Ophthalmologist Dr. Ajit Kumar Jain

In recognition of Cataract Awareness Month 2024, Dr. Ajit Kumar Jain emphasizes the critical role of detecting and treating cataracts early to maintain optimal eye health.

Cataracts, which cause clouding of the eye’s lens, can significantly impair vision.

Dr. Jain explains that symptoms such as reduced contrast sensitivity, sensitivity to glare (photophobia), seeing halos around lights, and difficulty driving at night are common among those with cataracts.

Initially, cataracts may affect only a small part of the lens, leading to minimal vision loss that may go unnoticed.

However, as the condition progresses and more of the lens becomes clouded, symptoms become more noticeable and pronounced.

Dr. Jain also notes that although rare, children can also develop cataracts due to factors like trauma or underlying metabolic disorders.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in such cases to prevent permanent vision loss.

Children born with cataracts often have other associated eye or health conditions, which may be linked to genetic factors or chromosomal disorders like Down syndrome.

He advises anyone experiencing sudden vision changes such as double vision, flashes of light, eye pain, or sudden headaches to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health center.

Cataract Awareness Month aims to raise awareness about the condition and promote proactive measures for early detection and treatment to preserve vision and overall eye health.
