In observance of PCOS Awareness Month, Dr. Kimberly Manbodh, a patient with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), has shared her personal and challenging journey to shed light on this often misunderstood condition.
Diagnosed with PCOS at 21, Dr. Manbodh’s path to diagnosis was fraught with difficulties.
Her symptoms, including acne, skin discoloration, and weight gain, were initially dismissed as typical aspects of adolescence.
It wasn’t until these symptoms began to significantly impact her daily life that she sought medical help.
However, the initial treatments, including birth control, exacerbated her symptoms rather than alleviating them.
Undeterred by these setbacks, Dr. Manbodh embarked on a journey of self-education about PCOS.
Recognizing a significant gap in awareness and resources in Guyana, she founded Cysterhood Support Guyana in 2019.
This organization aims to provide support and guidance to women grappling with PCOS.
Through the group, Dr. Manbodh has organized educational sessions, health fairs, and walks, all designed to raise awareness and offer support.
Dr. Manbodh’s efforts have been pivotal in improving understanding and management of PCOS in her community.
Despite the challenges, she has managed to lead a better quality of life and remains committed to helping others navigate their own PCOS journeys.
