General Secretary of the ruling PPP, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, has addressed concerns surrounding the decision to host this year’s Independence Anniversary flag-raising ceremony in Linden, Region 10.
Speaking during a press conference earlier today, he aimed to clarify issues raised by the opposition and encouraged people to attend the event.
Traditionally, the national Independence Day celebrations were held in Georgetown.
However, President Irfaan Ali’s ‘One Guyana’ initiative led the PPP/C administration to decentralize the celebrations to different regions.
Over the past two years, the festivities have taken place in Regions Two and Nine.
Dr. Jagdeo highlighted previous instances where the opposition questioned the decision to host celebrations outside of Georgetown.
Now, with the event scheduled for Region 10, the opposition APNU/AFC is urging people not to attend.
Dr. Jagdeo criticized this stance, calling it a “victim’s mentality.”
He emphasized the significant investments made in Region 10, historically a stronghold of the opposition PNCR.
Projects in housing and water sectors were cited as examples of ongoing development efforts in the region.
Dr. Jagdeo urged residents not to be swayed by calls to abstain from attending the celebrations, which are set to begin late on Saturday night.
