The Hinterland Scholarship Dormitory in Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, is set to undergo significant upgrades aimed at enhancing the living and learning environment for students from remote communities.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali made the announcement during a dinner with hinterland scholarship students at his official residence.
The planned upgrades include the addition of new sporting and artistic facilities, such as a hard tarmac for sports and a prefab art room.
In addition, general dormitory enhancements will be made to improve students’ comfort and well-being, fostering a supportive, family-like environment.
President Ali emphasized the government’s commitment to creating equal opportunities and investing in human capital development.
He noted that since 2020, over $300 million has been invested in supporting the educational development of students in remote areas.
This investment includes training for teachers and the establishment of modern schools equipped with internet access.
The necessary assessment of the dormitory’s needs has been completed, and work is expected to begin during the students’ holiday break.
These upgrades reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring equal educational opportunities for hinterland youths, setting the stage for future academic, technical, and leadership successes.
