As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday, March 8, we embark on a journey to highlight the remarkable stories of women shaping our society.
We bring you the inspiring narrative of Dominique Bones, a devoted mother of three, whose passion for the local hospitality industry knows no bounds.
Raised in a family deeply rooted in hospitality, 58-year-old Dominique Bones fondly recalls her childhood spent amidst the warm ambiance of her parents’ guest house on Koaw Island.
Despite her innate inclination towards the hospitality sector, her father initially discouraged her from pursuing a career in the field, fearing its demanding nature would impede her personal life.
Undeterred by her father’s reservations, Bones forged ahead, pursuing studies in communications and finance. However, her aspirations for a career in hospitality remained dormant until circumstances led her back to Guyana from the United States.
Today, she proudly serves as the hospitality coordinator for the Moray House Trust, a bed and breakfast facility nestled in Georgetown.
Reflecting on her journey, Bones emphasizes the inherent warmth and hospitality ingrained in Guyanese culture, which fuels her passion for the industry.
She sees her role not only as a profession but also as a means to showcase Guyana’s rich culture and heritage to visitors.
In commemoration of International Women’s Day, Bones shares a powerful message for women across the nation: “There is nothing a woman can’t do if she puts her mind into it.”
Encouraging aspiring entrepreneurs, she emphasizes the abundance of opportunities in the hospitality sector, noting that one doesn’t necessarily need a degree to establish a successful bed and breakfast.
International Women’s Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of empowering women in all spheres of life. In Guyana, countless women, like Dominique Bones, exemplify resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment, inspiring future generations to strive for their dreams.
As we celebrate the achievements and contributions of women worldwide, Dominique Bones stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment, reminding us that with dedication and perseverance, anything is possible.
