Dominican Republic Stages Comeback to Defeat Guyana in CAC Hockey Competition

Late goals from the Dominican Republic dashed Guyana’s hopes of a victory on Friday as the country’s senior men’s hockey team continued their participation in the Central America and Caribbean games.

After suffering a defeat in their opening clash against Trinidad, Guyana was determined to bounce back against the Dominican Republic.

The Guyana side started the match with aggression, and Captain Robert France led the charge with an opening goal in the 18th minute after a strong period of play. However, Dominican Republic’s skipper, Argeny Cabrera, led their fightback, equalizing five minutes later to make it 1-1.

In the 26th minute, Jamarj Assanah found the go-ahead goal for Guyana, giving them a promising position in the match. However, in the third quarter, Guyana began to lose shape, and the Dominican Republic capitalized by scoring two quick goals in the 29th and 33rd minutes, ultimately securing the victory.

Head coach Robert Fernandes expressed disappointment, believing that his team should have emerged victorious. Despite a lapse in concentration, Fernandes highlighted a perfect opportunity in the dying minutes of the game that went unconverted. Looking ahead, the coach is determined to see a clinical performance from his team in their upcoming match against Cuba on Sunday, as they strive to qualify for the next stage of the CAC tournament.

The Guyana team, led by Robert France, consists of Shakeem Fausette, Shaquon Favorite, Kareem McKenzie, Me’Shach Sargeant, and Andrew Stewart. They are supported by Coach John Abrahams and fitness trainer Theodore Henry.

Despite the setback, Guyana remains committed to giving their best in the tournament, and their focus is now on delivering a strong performance in their upcoming matches to secure a favorable position for the next stage.
