Guyanese powerlifter Dominic Tyrell

France-based Guyanese powerlifter Dominic Tyrell showcased his prowess at his debut outing in the World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships on Tuesday, securing a bronze medal in Lithuania.

The 24-year-old competed in the 83kg weight class, where he earned an individual bronze medal with a deadlift of 342.5 kg.

Tyrell’s impressive performance placed him behind Hungary’s Asein Enahoro, who lifted 367.5 kg, and Great Britain’s Kengamu Jurins, who lifted 350 kg.

Jurins eventually won the division.

Tyrell’s third and highest mark came after a series of successful lifts: he deadlifted 315 kg on his first attempt, 335 kg on his second, and achieved 342.5 kg on his final attempt to secure the podium spot.

In addition to his success in the deadlift, he completed a bench press of 167.5 kg and a best squat of 265 kg, totaling 775 kg overall.

Despite his strong performance, he finished sixth in the overall rankings.

Great Britain’s Jurins was honored as the overall winner with a total of 845 kg.

He was followed by USA’s Orhii Russel, who totaled 843.5 kg, and Hungary’s Enahoro, who finished third with 807.5 kg.

Tyrell’s success places him among the ranks of Guyanese powerlifting greats such as Winston Stoby, ‘Big’ John Edwards, Randolph Morgan, and Carlos Petterson-Griffith, who have all successfully represented Guyana at the World Powerlifting Championships.

The World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships is set to conclude on Sunday.
