The Chinese Digital Healthcare Seminar has come to a close, marking another concrete step by China and Guyana to embrace the digital transformation of healthcare.
At the closing ceremony, the Ministry of Health revealed just how far the sector has come.
Forty-two Guyanese completed the programme, which is aimed at strengthening human resources development and building capacity in the local health sector.
It forms part of China’s longstanding support for the sector, with a focus on cultivating more local professionals and better coordination among talent, technology and infrastructure – all part of the joint development of the Health Silk Road.
Speaking at the ceremony, Regional Health Officer, Dr. Cerdel McWatt pointed to the progress made over the past five years.
“In Guyana we have expanded in all sectors more so in health we have expanded tremendously Over the past five years, we would have added six new hospitals and more than 25 new Level One and Level Two facilities and of course, this has not stopped,” McWatt explained.
Digital technologies play an important role in improving the efficiency of healthcare delivery and management, and participants were encouraged to put what they have learnt into practice.
And there is more to come. Work is continuing on additional facilities, with a strong focus on improving healthcare in the hinterland.
“We are at the moment working on developing additional facilities, seven of which will be expanded throughout the length and breath of Guyana, with emphasis on improving health care in the hinterland areas. We are having new facilities that will be concluded by mid next year at Lethem, kato, moco and a little bit further down the line we will have Bartica and of course around next year too the new west Demerara regional hospital,” he said.
As Guyana continues to improve its healthcare, the aim is clear: access to quality care for every Guyanese, no matter where they live.
New hospitals, new facilities and now new digital skills are helping to bring that care within reach, from the city to the hinterland.
