Digicel Guyana Rewards Top Schools in 2023 Statewide School Football Competition

In a gesture of support for youth development and education, Digicel Guyana presented a total of two million dollars in prizes to the top four schools in their 2023 statewide school’s football competition. The tournament, which spanned from June to August, saw schools from across the country competing passionately on the football field.

Carmel Secondary School emerged as the champions, securing a significant prize of one million dollars to fund a school project. St. Ignatius School, the runners-up, received half a million dollars for a similar purpose. The third-place team, DC Caesar Fox Secondary School, was awarded three hundred thousand dollars, while Waramuri Top Primary School received two hundred thousand dollars.

Gabriella Chapman, PR and Communications Manager for Digicel Guyana, extended her congratulations to the winners and reaffirmed Digicel’s commitment to supporting education and sports development in Guyana.

Troy Mendonca, Director of the Petra Organisation, commended Digicel for its substantial financial investment in sports and youth development. He emphasized the importance of encouraging young athletes to stay in school.

Representing the Ministry of Education, Twana McCalmont highlighted the significance of partnerships in realizing programs like the statewide school football competition, emphasizing the positive impact on school football programs.

The tournament featured participation from over a hundred schools from all regions of the country. Schools battled it out at the regional level, with the top teams progressing to the round of 32 and ultimately to the final.

Ramesh Rupchand, Marketing Manager of Digicel Guyana, announced that discussions have already commenced with the Petra Organisation regarding a ninth edition of the highly regarded Digicel school football championship. The aim is to further enhance and improve the competition, continuing Digicel’s commitment to fostering youth talent and promoting sports development in Guyana.

This generous gesture by Digicel Guyana not only celebrates the talents of young footballers but also underscores the importance of education and youth development in the country. The partnership between the telecommunications giant and local organizations like Petra promises to provide a bright future for young athletes in Guyana.
