In the final day of the 2024 budget debates, Dr. Asha Kissoon, the parliamentary representative of the small parties’ joinder list, made her maiden presentation, expressing her support for the budget while offering constructive suggestions for enhancement.

Dr. Kissoon, who is a medical doctor practicing in the health sector, welcomed the allocation to the health sector but highlighted an outstanding concern related to the remuneration for doctors in the public health system.

She emphasized the need for fair compensation for the valuable contributions made by medical professionals.

The deputy speaker also commended the government’s initiatives for pensioners and teachers.

However, she suggested that there is room for improvement, particularly regarding the compensation of junior teachers.

Dr. Kissoon stressed the importance of recognizing the efforts of junior teachers and ensuring they receive adequate compensation.

In addition, Dr. Kissoon praised the government’s housing program, acknowledging its role in providing a basic need to thousands of Guyanese.

She also welcomed the increase in the income tax threshold to $100,000 but pointed out that the level of the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) on workers remains high and should be subject to review.

Closing her remarks, Dr. Kissoon expressed her overall support for the 2024 budget, emphasizing that it is about the well-being of the Guyanese people.

While acknowledging the positive aspects, she urged a thorough examination of certain areas to ensure that the budget best serves the interests of the citizens.
