The recent replacement of Span Nine on the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) has brought about significant enhancements, enabling the passage of larger vessels through the waterway.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill provided details about the increased retraction width of the bridge, allowing for more spacious transit of vessels.
It was noted that prior to the installation of the new Span Nine, the retraction width of the bridge measured 54 meters. However, with the successful replacement of Span Nine, the retraction width has been expanded to 70 meters. This increase in width now provides ample space for larger vessels to traverse the waterway with ease.
Minister Edghill expressed satisfaction with the successful upgrade, emphasizing that the full opening for the transit of vessels has been restored, allowing for more efficient navigation of ships and boats through the Demerara Harbour.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who is currently performing presidential functions, lauded the efforts put into the replacement and improvements of the bridge. He assured the public that the bridge would continue to receive proper maintenance to ensure its continued serviceability and operational efficiency.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge was closed for a period of over 60 hours to facilitate the replacement of Span Nine and other necessary works on the High Span and other components of the bridge.
However, after the successful completion of these critical tasks, the bridge was reopened, restoring essential connectivity for the public.
