Decrease in Tuberculosis Cases and Progress in HIV Treatment in Guyana

Recent reports from the Ministry of Health indicate a continued decline in tuberculosis (TB) cases in Guyana.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has highlighted that the number of annual TB cases has decreased from approximately 500 to fewer than 300 as of the previous year.

This positive trend is attributed to effective interventions and enhanced healthcare measures implemented by the ministry.

Dr. Anthony expressed hope that this downward trend will persist, emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts and interventions to further reduce TB incidence.

The progress reflects the ministry’s commitment to combating TB and improving public health outcomes.

In addition to TB advancements, there has been notable progress in the management of HIV.

Dr. Anthony reported that around 9,000 individuals living with HIV are currently virally suppressed.

This is measured through regular viral load tests, and achieving viral suppression means that individuals are unable to transmit the virus to others.

The minister commended the effectiveness of the current HIV treatment protocols and encouraged patients to continue adhering to their treatment regimens and undergoing regular testing to maintain this positive trend.
