In the ongoing debate over Guyana’s Budget 2024, Opposition Member of Parliament Tabitha Sarabo Halley expressed her view that the 1.146 trillion-dollar national budget fails to address the most critical need of citizens – the improvement of their current economic position.

She questioned the ideologies and philosophies behind the budget, emphasizing the importance of policies that contribute to the quality of life citizens deserve.

Responding to these concerns, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, defended Budget 2024, labeling it as a “road map to prosperity.”

Minister Parag argued that the fiscal package, like previous PPP/C budgets, is people-centered and underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the people.

Minister Parag highlighted the government’s fulfillment of its promise to increase the wages and salaries of citizens during its tenure.

She emphasized the administration’s care for public servants and acknowledged the challenges faced by citizens during the pandemic, asserting that the government is taking steps to address these concerns.

Additionally, Minister Parag commended the allocation of over 103 billion dollars in Budget 2024 to ensure that local democratic organs nationwide are adequately financed.

This financial support aims to drive development across the nation and empower local communities.

As the debate continues, both sides present their perspectives on the budget, emphasizing its implications for the citizens and the nation’s progress.
