The budget debate has entered its fourth day, with the opposition continuing to assert that the budget lacks sufficient provisions for vulnerable members of society.

In the latest session, the APNU/AFC shadow for human services, Natasha Singh-Lewis, raised concerns about child abuse cases and the limited number of social workers and childcare officers across the country.

She criticized the old age pension increase and the perceived lack of provisions for addressing homelessness.

The minister mentioned a $172 million allocation for a new senior citizens home, emphasizing the government’s concern for the elderly.

She also outlined plans for new facilities, including a residential facility for adults with disabilities, a rehabilitated Mahaica Girls Home, and a Juvenile Justice Processing Centre.

The debate reflects ongoing disagreements between the opposition and the government regarding the allocation of resources for social services and support for vulnerable populations.
