For the first time, residents of Crabwood Creek and Moleson Creek in East Berbice Corentyne are enjoying access to electricity, thanks to the efforts of the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL).

This milestone fulfills a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali earlier this year during his engagement with communities in Region 6.

Residents expressed their excitement over the development, highlighting the benefits it brings to their daily lives.

Nazmoon Yassin, a resident of Crabwood Creek, shared:“I’m very excited and very happy for the current because now we can use a lot of fridge, TV, a lot of current things. So I’m very excited and thankful to the President of Guyana for helping us out.”

Similarly, Oswald Phoenix noted: “This alright now because you can get our own lil fridge, you can put your little cold things and drinks and don’t have to run to the shops and thing.”

In neighboring Moleson Creek, work is underway to connect residents to the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System. Resident Royanand Persaud expressed his optimism:“So far, them bring in the wire about halfway or three-quarter way of the work. Abee hopeful, look me done wire my house and me just waiting on the current from GPL.”

Former Chairman of the Crabwood Creek NDC, Teerbhawandat Arjun, highlighted that residents have been waiting for over 15 years for this development.

The process began in May after President Ali’s engagement, during which GPL promptly assessed the electricity needs of the area and provided a timely solution.

This initiative marks a significant step toward improving the quality of life for residents and advancing development in the region.
