The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) is gearing up to send the country’s top pugilists to the 1st World Olympic Qualifiers in Italy and the prestigious Youth World Boxing Cup in Montenegro.
This presents a significant opportunity for Guyana’s Olympic prospects to secure their spots at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
Desmond Amsterdam, Keevin Allicock, and Joel Williamson are among the elite boxers set to represent Guyana at the World Olympic Qualifiers in Busto Arsizio in Varese, Italy, scheduled from February 29th to March 12th.
They will vie for a total of 59 coveted places in the competition under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In a parallel event, Caribbean championship medalists Joshua Thambaran and Shakquain James will showcase their skills at the Youth World Boxing Cup in Montenegro from March 3rd to 11th.
Guiding them will be GBA Technical Officer and national coach Lennox Daniels.
The Youth World Boxing Cup features 13 weight categories for men and 12 weight divisions for women, offering a platform for emerging talents to test their mettle against the world’s best.
According to GBA officials, participation in both events is of paramount importance, reflecting the country’s commitment to nurturing boxing talent and competing on the global stage.
These competitions provide invaluable opportunities for Guyana’s boxers to gain exposure and experience against elite competitors from Europe, Asia, Pan America, and beyond.
