The countdown to Diwali 2024 has officially begun with the opening of the Diwali Mahotsav at the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, West Coast Demerara, on Monday evening.

The event, which marks the start of the Hindu festival of lights, brought together thousands of Guyanese to celebrate the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali attended the celebration, where he highlighted the importance of each individual’s role in conquering darkness and encouraging personal growth.

The President emphasized that Diwali represents not only a spiritual victory but also a time for reflection, unity, and collective participation.

The evening featured a vibrant mix of cultural performances, including traditional dances and songs, as well as a parade, floats illuminated with lights, and the lighting of Diyas.

In keeping with the spirit of the festival, attendees were encouraged to light their own Diyas to signify hope and positivity in their lives.

The Diwali Mahotsav will continue at the Leonora facility throughout the week, with festivities set to culminate on Thursday, the official observance of Diwali, which will include the lighting of over 5,000 Diyas.

The President also spoke about the progress the government has made in improving the lives of Guyanese, citing the availability of better education, housing, and democracy.

He reassured citizens that hope is no longer just a dream, but a reality that is actively being fostered through government initiatives.

The event is expected to continue attracting both locals and visitors as Diwali celebrations spread across the country, offering a chance for all Guyanese to come together and celebrate the enduring values of hope, unity, and resilience.
