In the aftermath of the Stabroek Wharf collapse, City Councilor Steven Jacobs has made a poignant call for the Mayor to assume responsibility for the maintenance of municipal facilities.
Jacobs, a member of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), emphasized the need for accountability from the city’s leadership in ensuring the safety and upkeep of essential infrastructure, particularly in light of recent incidents like the wharf collapse.
Phase two of the debris removal process, led by the central government, is currently underway following Tuesday’s collapse, with expectations for completion today. Plans are set to commence the removal of the wharf’s decking on Sunday.
Former Mayor and Councilor Patricia Chase-Green revealed that the wharf had been condemned as far back as 2013-2014, underscoring long-standing concerns over its structural integrity.
Chase-Green lamented the challenges faced in advancing city development proposals within the M&CC, citing financial constraints and the need for collaborative efforts.
Councilor Alfonso DeArmas echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the lack of actionable plans and financial organization within council meetings.
Meanwhile, Chase-Green urged vendors to cooperate as the government works towards debris removal, emphasizing the importance of collective citizen involvement in city upkeep efforts.
Councilor Don Singh highlighted the council’s predicament, describing it as stuck in a rut with no clear path forward.
As discussions ensue within the M&CC regarding accountability and city development strategies, the aftermath of the Stabroek Wharf incident serves as a sobering reminder of the pressing need for proactive governance and infrastructure maintenance.
