Cottage Pump Station Strengthens Drainage and Irrigation in Region Five

In a proactive response to the challenges posed by devastating floods in 2021 and 2022, the Guyana government is enhancing the Drainage and Irrigation system in Region Five with the imminent completion of the Cottage Pump Station.

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha, during his visit to the site last week, provided insights into this critical infrastructure development.

Awarded to VALS Construction, the contract for the Cottage, Mahaicony pump station is slated for completion within three months.

Minister Mustapha emphasized the urgency of the project by highlighting that the contractor will be operating on a 24-hour basis to meet the stipulated deadline.

The government’s commitment to addressing drainage challenges extends beyond the pump station project.

The region is poised to benefit from the construction of approximately five drainage structures akin to the successful Hope Canal.

Minister Mustapha outlined the proactive approach, indicating that work on these structures should commence shortly.

The strategic policies and investments implemented by Guyana underscore its leadership role in CARICOM.

The nation is actively advancing the agricultural food system agenda, emphasizing the need for robust drainage and irrigation facilities in each region to support and sustain farming initiatives.

As Guyana positions itself as a regional leader, the completion of the Cottage Pump Station signifies a crucial step towards fortifying the country’s infrastructure resilience and ensuring the well-being of its agricultural sector.
