Cornette and Persaud Secure Qualification for CARFITA Trails

Track and field athletes Jaheel Cornette and Kaidon Persaud have recently achieved the qualifying standards for the upcoming CARFITA games, marking significant progress for Guyana’s athletics contingent.

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) is intensifying its preparations for the 2024 CARFITA games scheduled to take place in Grenada from March 30 to April 1.

A total of ten athletes have met the qualifying criteria thus far, showcasing the growing strength of Guyana’s track and field talent pool.

The AAG recently organized a developmental meet at the Leonora Track and Field facility to facilitate athletes’ training and performance evaluation.

Among the notable qualifiers is Commonwealth Gold Medalist Tianna Springer, who excelled in both the women’s 200 and 400 meters in the under 20 category.

Other under 20 athletes who met the standards include CARFITA medalist Attoya Harvey, Commonwealth medalist Javon Roberts, and sprinter Ezekiel Newton.

Additionally, high jumper Charissa December and sprinter Jaheel Cornette have also secured their spots with impressive performances.

Cornette, reflecting on his stellar 200-meter run during an interview with NCN Sport, expressed his determination to excel at the CARFITA games, emphasizing his rigorous training regimen and aspirations to bring home a medal for his country.

In the under 17 category, Athaleyha Hinckson achieved qualification in the women’s 100 meters, while Duel Europe secured a spot in the long jump event.

Kaidon Persaud, another promising athlete, qualified in the 400 meters alongside Ryan Joseph, who excelled in long jump.

Persaud, echoing Cornette’s sentiments, affirmed his readiness to make his CARFITA debut, highlighting his preparation and aspirations to succeed at the games.

As an 800-meter specialist and javelin thrower, Persaud aims to maximize his potential and contribute to Guyana’s medal tally at the prestigious event.

With Cornette and Persaud joining the ranks of qualified athletes, Guyana’s representation at the CARFITA games promises to be competitive and promising.

As the athletes continue their training and preparations, hopes are high for a successful outing in Grenada.
