As work progresses on the Corentyne Highway expansion project, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill met with residents and stakeholders today to provide an update on the construction.
Acknowledging the temporary inconvenience caused by the works, the Minister emphasised that the project will bring long-term economic development to Region Six.
The 80-kilometre highway expansion, spanning from Canje to Moleson Creek, is expected to bring significant transformation to Region Six and is considered one of the largest road projects in the country.
Minister Edghill highlighted the long-term development the highway will bring to the region, noting that construction is being carried out with careful consideration for the safety of commuters.
“We realise that we have to make more room. We have to put in the safety, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, safety signs, street lights, road safety measures, improve some of the turns to make sure the geometry of the road is not lending to accidents but you could commute in a safe manner,” he said.
While major improvements have already been completed on the East Bank Berbice road leading to Mara, the minister said options are being explored to upgrade the entire network.
In Region Five, he also revealed that measures are being considered to improve the roadway from Rosignol to Mahaica.
“So when you reach to Mahaica four lane that is currently under construction, you commute into Georgetown is going to be significant. So we are looking at doing work right now from Mahaica Bridge all the way to Abary Bridge into four lanes,” he added.
