Grief hangs over the families of three Corentyne youths, including a 16-year-old, who lost their lives in a tragic accident along the Maida Public Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as 16-year-old Porshotan Hoolasia of Port Mourant, 23-year-old Priyas Mursalin of Chesney, and 20-year-old Amir Khan of John’s, Corentyne.
They were occupants of motorcar PLL 4312, which was involved in a head-on collision with motorcar PAL 9292.
Police say motorcar PLL 4312 was allegedly being driven at a high rate of speed by Khan when he attempted to overtake another vehicle. During the manoeuvre, the vehicle reportedly entered the path of motorcar PAL 9292, which was proceeding west along the southern drive lane at a normal rate of speed.
The impact of the collision caused motorcar PLL 4312 to veer off and crash into a GPL utility pole on the southern side of the roadway. Both drivers and the occupants sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. However, despite efforts to save them, Khan, Mursalin and Hoolasia were pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor.
At the homes of the victims, an overwhelming sense of grief has settled over their families as relatives struggle to come to terms with the tragedy. Shivanie Subramanie, the mother of, Porshotan, a J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School student, recalled the moment she was informed of the devastating news.
“Two boys come with a motorbike and them seh that how me son reach in accident and me tell them no. Them seh yes. Me seh no, he just left home. Them seh no. he reach in accident and he dead.
