Containers Packed for Venezuela Relief Mission

A number of containers are being packed with essential items as the President Irfaan Ali led coordinated humanitarian operation and regional mobilization continues for earthquake torn Venezuela.

The coordinated effort is being spare headed by the Civil Defence Commission.

NCN spoke with Deputy Director of the Civil Defence Commission, Lieutenant Colonel Mark Thomas and he says support has been tremendous.

“We are loading containers at the Muneshwar wharf and at the terminal. In Houston. We have a number of soldier’s assisting because that is manual labour. We also have containers being loaded at DDL and at Banks DIH limited. We also had a lot of support from the Venezuelan diaspora up to last evening we had a number of them came with a canter load and the support overall has been good,” he said.

The shipment represents Guyana’s commitment to supporting its regional neighbour during this difficult time. The humanitarian effort is being coordinated through a partnership between government agencies, relief organisations, and private sector stakeholders, all working together to ensure critical assistance reaches those impacted by the devastating earthquake as quickly as possible.

The vessel capable of transporting 8,000 tonnes of humanitarian supplies is expected to depart Guyana tomorrow Friday with relief items for earthquake-stricken Venezuela, as Guyana intensifies a national and regional response to support its neighbour’s recovery efforts. President Ali said the vessel’s capacity has allowed Guyana to expand the operation beyond national support to include contributions from across CARICOM.

As soon as all containers are packed, preparations will begin for the containers to depart for Venezuela.
