Construction will begin this year on the regional law school in Guyana, which will attract students from across the Caribbean and provide affordable and accessible legal education for Guyanese.
This was announced by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, SC, during day five of the 2026 Budget debates on Friday,
AG Nandlall reminded the National Assembly that this endeavour was long in the works, pursued under the president-ship of Dr Cheddi Jagan.
He proudly declared that, building on this foundation, Guyana secured the permission of the Council of Legal Education for the construction of this facility under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.
“We have already identified and cleared eight acres of land at campus Turkeyen of UG and in this budget we have the first capital injection and during the year 2026 we will begin the construction of a law school in Guyana,” he said.
The AG said that this will not only serve as an academic institution but also as an economic venture.
“People of the Caribbean will come here, and they will have to live, find accommodation, eat…and Guyanese will benefit from those investments,” AG Nandlall pointed out.
The establishment of this institution will bring an end to decades of limited quotas for Guyanese students at regional institutions like the Hugh Wooding Law School.
