In a significant development for residents along the Demerara River, construction of a new boat mooring facility is set to commence in August.
Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, announced this during his visit to Linden on Wednesday.
The planned facility will feature a modern enclosed waiting area and washroom facilities, designed to enhance the comfort and convenience for passengers.
The total cost for the construction is estimated to be between 10 to 12 million dollars.
Minister Edghill revealed that the design for the facility has been finalized and emphasized that the initiative aims to provide better services for travelers in the area.
The facility is expected to be completed by the end of August 2024.
The project has been met with approval from local leaders.
Hanun Chattergoon, Toshao of Muritaro, expressed gratitude towards the government, highlighting the benefits the new facility will bring to the numerous boats operating in the river.
Owen Bowling, Toshao of Malali, also welcomed the project, noting its positive impact on the community.
In addition to the new docking facility, Minister Edghill announced that the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) will soon establish an office in Linden to improve regulation of the waterway.
